How to Do a Yes or No Tarot Reading

  1. 1

    Type your question

Phrase it so it can be answered yes or no. Adding a time frame, like "this month", makes the answer sharper.

  2. 2

    Pick one card

Repeat the question silently and choose the face-down card you feel drawn to.

  3. 3

Read the answer and the reason

Based on the card and its orientation, you'll see yes, no, or it depends, plus the reason behind it.

What Yes, No and It Depends Mean

Yes
Things are moving the way you want. Follow the direction the card's reason points to, and you'll ride that momentum more easily.
No
On the current path, the outcome you want is hard to reach. A no isn't "never". It's the card telling you this approach won't get you there.
It depends
This could tip either way. Meet the condition the card names, whether it's something you do or a matter of timing, and it leans toward yes.

How to Ask for a Clear Answer

Questions that get clear answers

  • Set a time frame: "Will they reach out to me this month?"
  • Ask one thing at a time: "Will my confession go well?" and "Will we end up together?" are separate questions
  • Ask about your own move: "Should I ask them out to dinner?"

Questions one card can't answer well

  • "When will I get married?" Timing isn't a yes-or-no question
  • "How do they feel about me?" — someone's feelings take a multi-card reading to see in full
  • Redrawing for the same question: your first card is the answer for now

FAQ

Is yes or no tarot accurate?

The card clearly shows which way your question is heading right now. It can't guarantee an outcome, but every yes and every no comes with the card's reason, and reading that reason shows you how to use the answer.

Can I redraw for the same question?

We don't recommend it. The first card you draw is the answer for that moment. If it doesn't sit right, don't redraw; get a three-card reading to see why. Asking again after things change (a few days to a week later) is fine.

How are reversed cards judged?

Upright and reversed each have their own answer. When an encouraging card appears reversed, its momentum stalls, so it usually becomes a no or it depends. A heavy card reversed often signals the worst is passing, so it tends to be it depends.

What should I do if I get "It depends"?

The card is saying "no as things stand, yes if a certain condition is met", or "not yet". Check the condition or timing in the reason. A three-card reading shows exactly what will tip it toward yes.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up?

The yes or no answer is free, with no sign-up, and you can draw as many times as you like. You can carry your question into an in-depth three-card reading and draw the cards without signing up; to see the full interpretation, a free account gives you one free reading per day.

How do I read questions that aren't yes or no?

Questions like "when", "how should I" or "what are they feeling" need more than one yes-or-no card. If you're torn between two options, try Two-Choice Tarot. To see how things will unfold, use the Past, Present and Future spread.
